Learning a new language is fun and enjoyable. It has lots of benefit and to me, it’s kind of therapeutic as well.
But for some, this may not be the case. Learning a new language can be stressful and boring especially if you are putting on too many expectations on yourself.
Let’s take a look at how you can make the learning experience interesting, fun and effective at the same time.
Get A Learning Buddy or Group
This is one of the best and most effective ways when it comes to learning something new. This is where you can openly ask questions or discuss a certain topic when in doubt. No one is going to judge you as everyone is in a learning mode at this stage. In fact, everyone gets to learn faster and understand better when they start the discussion going.
Back To Kindie Days
A very fun way of learning is to adopt some learning methodology of those in your lower primary or kindie days. Remember how you learn through simple exercises like filling in the blanks and making sentences from new words of the week? This is exactly what you are going to do. Try it. It’s effective.
Explore Antonyms And Synonyms
This is an effective way to improve your vocabulary. For each word you’re learning, you may want to check out at least one of its antonyms or synonyms. And very soon, you’ll have a pretty impressive vocab list under your belt.
Games are proven to be effective even for adult learners. You learn faster because it’s stimulating and it motivates you to challenge yourself even further.
Here’s my favorite game which I found it to be fun and interesting. First, think of a theme. For example, let’s say the theme colors. Take a piece of paper and write down all the colors you know in the new language you’re learning. To make it more fun, put up a challenge with your learning buddy. See who can come out with the most correct answers. The winning person shall get a small treat, like a cup of coffee or a plate of nasi lemak from her buddy.
New Language Chat Group
Form a chat group using the watsapp or similar facility. It’s free and easy to set up. I think it’s meaningless to just learn a new language without making an effort to practice using what you’ve learned. So, a chat group works wonder for this purpose. Make sure to participate every day if you want to see yourself improve faster.
Tap Into Your Vocal Talent
Do you know you can learn many new words from a song? Choose an easy song in the new language you’re learning. You don’t have to learn the whole song if it’s too hard for your level at that point. Repetitive lines or chorus parts are the best. Sing your heart out. Enjoy the music while you learn the language. What a perfect combination!
Write A Happiness Note
Get yourself some post-it notes and start writing short happy messages for your family and colleagues. Spread the happiness and let them learn together with you. Happiness is contagious. So go around and create the magic right away.
Now, what do you think of these 7 awesome and fun ways to learning a new language? I’ve tried and love them all. You can also apply them if you’re learning other subjects than language. Suggest these ideas to your learning buddy and let everyone benefits from them.
Till next time.
